There are numerous titles I could recommend to you that would disprove that statement... Many scenes in Metal Gear Solid 4 easily out-do the best action scenes from films like Transformers (one of my favorite action films) and reach emotional levels on-par with most of the dramas released in the past decade (admitting, films tend to deliver drama better, but many "drama" films play out like the worst video games).

Well, considering how bad they were to begin with, they could only go up! Seriously, the story and dialogue in GW is nothing amazing. Too many games push cut-scenes and insist upon a story no matter how infantile the writing is, just because devs think games need to have them these days.

Er, the gameplay? Fun of exploration, maybe to get nice equipment? If I wanted to play PvE for the cut-scenes, I'd do better to just rent a movie.

The best games let's you play the whole storyline, without leaving anything out.

I don't think all games need a story, so a vague story is just fine in a game.
In fact, I think there are a lot of games that would be a better experience if they cut their stories and background info to a minimum, and let the player's imaginations fill in the details.

Most Games were desighned to ingage a gamer into the world created by the maker of the game.. Its desighned to guide the main hero through the sotry (Making it a first person view of the movie, game saree interactive movies you know ) The way the character progresses, the choices character makes, armor looks, name backstory, is all designed BY THE GAMER.. isnt that enaugh of player created content... Stories have the grand finale which gives epic feeling to the player..in order to get this epic feeling you have to have a story prior to it for the build up..Accordin to you..you want to take away the build up for the epicnes and that is no no

iirc, don't you automatically get back all the materia she had on her when she leaves the party before her death?

Yeah, I think maybe that's the problem. These are games, not all of them need a story. Some work really well like you describe, but some are just games, you know? Do any of us really need a reason to shoot lasers at a creature in a death arena, or cast discord on a charr?

This is correct, Cloud et al have plenty of time to strip her corpse of loot before dumping it in a nearby pool of water.
I'ld say part of the issue is most games fail to link together story and gameplay to any significant degree. Final fantasies are particularly bad at this, you basically just fight a few hundred random encounters while shuttling about between cutscenes. The random encounters don't effect how the plot unfolds at all, nor do they add anything meaningful to it.
I find myself more emotionally responsive to games that do mesh story and gameplay well - Like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and Iji. The former two tell their story primarily through the gameplay rather than cutscenes. The latter changes depending on how you play - avoid killing anyone and you'll find logs left by the enemy questioning which side you are on, and the enemy actually calls for a truce at one stage. Kill indiscriminately and the logs are quite different, especially when one curses you for killing some mook early on who happens to be the log-writers best friend.
